In a new paper released last month in BioScience we argue that Indigenous fishery systems and governance can promote more resilient salmon fisheries, and argue for the revival of these systems. Indigenous management of salmon was intentionally displaced by colonization, and many traditional fishing methods were outlawed, despite their high selectivity and their potential to support sustainable fisheries. With salmon fisheries on the brink of collapse across much of the Pacific Northwest, the time has come to revive these systems and empower local communities as managers and stewards of salmon populations.
